An online collaborative live art project exploring the female gaze in celebration of International Women’s Day 2021.

Sweet ‘Art are delighted to invite you to join us for the Intersect Project 2021. Sweet ‘Art developed the Intersect collaborative live art project for WOW Festival 2018, in order to explore the female gaze, subverting the traditional male gaze in art and introducing an intersectional feminist perspective, as artists created portraits of participating women sitters.

This year the project will respond to the current restrictions in our abilities to truly be together in solidarity and support on International Women’s Day by moving online. Many marginalised groups have been disproportionally affected in various ways by the pandemic and we wish to make a creative, collaborative and safe space in which women and non-binary people may be seen and heard in their unique experience, during this ongoing difficult time.

Four women or nb artists will be invited by Sweet ‘Art to create collaborative online portraits of female/nb sitters during the day on 13th of March. Each of the 4 artists will use a 15 minute slot to create portraits via an online meeting platform. As part of this year’s unique take on the project sitters will also be invited prior to their sitting to contribute a piece of writing to us in response to the question “How would I like to be seen and heard?” Responses could take any form including poetry, prose, a letter, statement or diary entry. It may be a word, a sentence or a longer statement, but must be able to be read out by one of the Sweet ‘Art team within the drawing slot. Artists will create a visual representation of the sitters as they reflect on the sitters’ words.

Following the sittings, one of the artists will be commissioned to use a combination of all the 4 portraits to create one final portrait for the sitter to keep. All final portraits will represent differing feminist perspectives that explore the female gaze, creating space for women and non-binary people to be seen and heard in their experience. This artwork will be sent to the sitter to keep at the end of the project.

Sweet ‘Art are a non funded project and operate primarily on an artist cooperative funded basis. For this project artists will be paid for their commitment and work and this will be funded by sitters’ ticket payment of £15 each.
